The latest watch trends taking BaselWorld 2011 by storm where hopefully more in line with what today’s consumer desires; cleaner, well-made products that are stylish yet understated. Seeming to be abandoning oversized cases and ornate bezels that dominated the display floors just a few years ago, in a phrase, what was old is now new again. The trend today is moving towards cleaner dials and marker shapes of eras popular many, many years ago. Today’s focus has taken a sharp turn towards legacy and tradition by reaching back into history as a source for divine inspiration.

Connecting the wearer to simpler, less complicated times, when our lives were not quite so “gadget” oriented i.e. pre cell phones, iPods, tablet computers and other devises that in many ways have been threatening to make the personal timepiece obsolete; legacy and tradition are a link back to these earlier times. Many longstanding watchmakers have a great deal of history to tap into to draw inspiration from for today’s current design offerings. Merely re-releasing old designs is not the answer though. A timepiece should still be a reflection of both the person that made it and the person that has purchased it. We often make a statement with our selection of the timepiece that we elect to strap onto our wrist, and everyone else knows this as well.

Current trends in the sizes of bezels for men’s wrist watches today are moving to smaller 32mm to 42 mm sizes. With the trend in a bezel size going to “jumbo” in recent years with sizes in the 46 mm to 48mm ranges, the trend for big has simply run its course. Perhaps it is time to return these “jumbo” sized wrist watches to the jewelry box for a while until fashion trends dictate pulling them back out of storage.

Reaching back to the 1960′s, Girard-Perregaux, in celebrating their 220′TH anniversary, has recreated a 1966 watch design that reflects classic styling combined with a new tasteful color scheme that is both easy on the eyes and very functional.

Moving back in time to capture the look of fine white gold, they have spiced this offering up a little by adding a touch of blue to create a very pleasant looking color combination on this watch. A 40mm chronograph featuring column wheels and a 30-minute counter, this timepiece comes with a see through back case so one can also enjoy viewing the CP030C0 movement developed and produced exclusively by Girard-Perregaux.

In unrelated news, Jorg Gray, the American watch brand, has announced that it is releasing a limited edition watch in honor of Alex Tagliani. As Jorg Gray’s brand ambassador, Tagliani will be honored with the creation and distribution of model 9100-77, which features a Swiss ISA chronograph movement designed in a fashion to imbue a sense of speed, and skill that was necessary to set a qualifying speed of 226 MPH in the 2010 Indianapolis 500.

It is no coincidence that Jorg Gray intends to limit the release of this model to exactly 226 pieces as well. The watch is expected to retail in the neighborhood of $995 and is expected to be available sometime in June of 2011.

Brand ambassadors for Richard Mille, Rafael Nadal and Bubba Watson, have both been on a collective tear lately in their respective sports of tennis and golf. Rafael wears a RM 027 designed exclusively for him, and he recently claimed victory in the Tourino de Monte Carlo. Bubba Watson recently won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans while wearing his RM 038 Tourbillon.

HD3 JorgHysek Slyde Watches San Diego CA

In an exciting announcement for the North American market, Luxury Montres LLC has indicated that it is now responsible for distribution of HD3, a watch brand by designer Jorg Hysek. What is truly unique is the brands “Slyde” timepiece that incorporates some of the functionality of today’s smart phones into this unusual watch. With modern technology meeting watch design, one can now easily change the appearance of their dial style with the wave of a finger. Through the use of a tactile screen, which can be presented either horizontally or vertically, the wearer can change applications and dial presentation by simply sliding their finger over the screen.

With the incorporation of some of the latest nanotechnology into timepieces, one is left to wonder just how much longer it will be before we have wrist-ware that provides the two way functionality depicted long ago in the Dick Tracy comic series. Is the introduction of the “Slyde” the next step towards seeing a two-way wristwatch as a reality? Nonetheless, the introduction of this technology is certainly a giant step into doing something radically different even if it falls short of full-fledged two-way communication capability.

Expected to come out in September of 2011, the “Slyde” series of watches will not be cheap with an expected introductory price in the market of around $5,000, but they will certainly take the market by storm once introduced. This is both a very clever application of today’s technology and very advanced. From the standpoint of being able to make a statement with your selection of a highly crafted timepiece, the “Slyde” will certainly set you apart from the pack. One can also expect that this watch will set the stage for future innovations in watches unlike anything seen before, so stay tuned!
