The latest watch trends taking BaselWorld 2011 by storm where hopefully more in line with what today’s consumer desires; cleaner, well-made products that are stylish yet understated. Seeming to be abandoning oversized cases and ornate bezels that dominated the display floors just a few years ago, in a phrase, what was old is now new again. The trend today is moving towards cleaner dials and marker shapes of eras popular many, many years ago. Today’s focus has taken a sharp turn towards legacy and tradition by reaching back into history as a source for divine inspiration.
Connecting the wearer to simpler, less complicated times, when our lives were not quite so “gadget” oriented i.e. pre cell phones, iPods, tablet computers and other devises that in many ways have been threatening to make the personal timepiece obsolete; legacy and tradition are a link back to these earlier times. Many longstanding watchmakers have a great deal of history to tap into to draw inspiration from for today’s current design offerings. Merely re-releasing old designs is not the answer though. A timepiece should still be a reflection of both the person that made it and the person that has purchased it. We often make a statement with our selection of the timepiece that we elect to strap onto our wrist, and everyone else knows this as well.
Current trends in the sizes of bezels for men’s wrist watches today are moving to smaller 32mm to 42 mm sizes. With the trend in a bezel size going to “jumbo” in recent years with sizes in the 46 mm to 48mm ranges, the trend for big has simply run its course. Perhaps it is time to return these “jumbo” sized wrist watches to the jewelry box for a while until fashion trends dictate pulling them back out of storage.
