Kelly + Jeffrey: The surfing championship and the 44 diamonds

The Proposal

Jeffrey proposed to Kelly in the summer of 2018. “We were volunteering in Hawaii for the adaptive surfing championship,” said Kelly.  “It was a planned trip, so I felt like he might propose because earlier in the year he said he wanted to propose on a trip.”

“I was trying to be so sneaky,” said Jeffrey. “I could tell she knew I was going to ask. I already had planned to do it and I couldn’t push it off or she would be disappointed. I knew she was going to know, but I tried to surprise her.“

On their last day in Hawaii, heading to dinner, Jeffrey led her to a park near the beach near sunset. “I remember looking at the water and I heard the ring box open and I turned around and he was down on one knee,” said Kelly.

The next day, they shared the news at the surfing contest. “It was our first-year volunteering. We are really good friends with adaptive surfers because of my company.” Kelly’s company offers portable pathways for people with disabilities to get over any terrain, such as sand, gravel, and snow.

The Ring

Kelly and Jeffrey’s blush-colored rose gold engagement ring has a 1.12 carat cushion-shape peach morganite center stone with a fine square diamond halo. The diamond band’s split-shank gives this ring a modern look. Just gorgeous!

When asked what she loves most about her ring, Kelly said, “I would say Jeffrey did a really good job finding something unique. I told him I liked rose gold and a cushion cut.” Jeffrey designed the ring with Jenny at Diamonds Forever. According to Kelly, Jeffrey did a great job! Kelly said she couldn’t stop staring at her ring at dinner the night he proposed.

“When we got out the appraisal, we couldn’t believe it when we saw there were 44 diamonds in the band. Our lucky number is 44.” Jeffrey said this was “just by chance.”

Finding Forever

Kelly and Jeffrey plan to marry next fall. When asked what her favorite thing about Jeffrey is, she said, “I would say definitely how kind and patient he is. That’s really shown in our relationship and in how he supports me and my business. That takes a lot of patience. Jeffrey was a rescue swimmer in the Navy for six years. I met him his first year out of the Navy in 2015. I started my company in 2018. We work well together. At the surfing competition, Jeffrey helps surfers that are disabled from the water to the sand and then I get the surfer over the sand.”

When asked how they met, Kelly said, “It was at my good friend’s birthday dinner. We were at a country line dancing theme bar. I love line dancing and I love country music, so I asked if anyone knew how to two-step and Jeffrey said, ‘well, I’m from Texas.’ He had the biggest beard. It was December and he had a beanie on. I could barely see his face, but he had nice eyes. Very very kind eyes. I found out months and months later that he told a friend that night ‘I’m going to marry that girl!’”

Kelly and Jeffrey started dating after that first night. “We went on a bunch of dates that week because he was going to Texas to be with his family for Christmas. We pretty much knew right away. It was early the next year when we really fell in love.”

When asked how he knew Kelly was the one, Jeffrey said, “It’s a feeling, you know. It’s just the way we were able to be around each other. It’s the way she was able to push me and her drive to make me a better person, that is what really stuck with me.”

Jeffrey’s favorite thing about Kelly is “her drive and compassion to help others. It shows in her business, the way that she was able to design a product to help people.”

Kelly and Jeffrey’s Tips

Kelly’s advice for anyone about to propose, “I would say, try not to be nervous, because it really is all about how you love each other. That’s the special thing, it doesn’t matter as much where you do it, who you are in front of, if you have a camera crew. All that matters is that you want to spend the rest of your life with each other.”

Jeffrey’s advice on designing an engagement is to “ask her to send you photos of what she likes, don’t go into it blindly. But at the end of the day, it’s not about the ring, it’s not about the proposal, it’s about you feeling love for each other. But a nice ring helps since she has to wear it for the rest of her life.”

❤️ Thank you so much Kelly and Jeffrey for sharing your story. What a beautiful and heartfelt proposal!
