Cut
Many people confuse the cut of a diamond with its shape (round, square, etc.), but cut actually refers to the way that a diamond interacts with light. Graded from poor to excellent, the most well-cut diamonds have an even pattern of bright and dark areas. Brightness, fire and scintillation should also be created.
Color
Diamonds are rated on a D through Z scale, based on their lack of color. Stones range from colorless to light in color, and the rarest and most expensive of diamonds are those that have no hue.
Clarity
Clarity is measured under a microscope, as most characteristics are too small to be seen by the human eye. Based on a scale from flawless to included, flawless diamonds have no inclusions or blemishes at 10x magnification.
Carat
A measurement of how much a diamond weights, one carat is equal to 200 milligrams. Larger diamonds are of a higher carat and are typically more expensive, because of their rarity.
