At Diamonds Forever, I am frequently asked by our clients about how they can find out their significant other’s ring size on the sly to keep things a surprise. Over the years I have come up with a few tricks and have also learned some clever ways from our own customers! I suggest that you use one or several of these methods if you are struggling to figure out her ring size.

• If you are absolutely set on a surprise proposal but you still want to find out her ring size directly from the source, ask your girlfriend in a very subtle, smooth way. You can pretend, for example, that you trying to find a ring for your mom or sister etc. This works best if the false ring recipient is close in finger/hand size to your girl’s. Nonchalantly ask what her ring size is so you can use it for a reference. If you want create a rock solid ruse, purchase an inexpensive ring (maybe something in sterling silver) and ask her if she approves. She’ll probably try it on too! After you’ve proposed you can give her the tester ring as a sweet memento of your sneakiness.
• Another awesome way to find out her ring size is to ask one of her friends. Friends can be have a great wealth of insight, not just about ring size but also style and stone shapes! And, if the friend doesn’t know right away you can recruit her as your confidant so she can gather the info the next time they hang out. Maybe you could have your friend arrange to check out engagement rings “just for fun.” This way she can get professionally sized and figure out what types of rings she likes. Make sure you find a friend that can keep a secret, it’s going to be a challenge to keep this secret bottled up!

• You can also lift one of her old rings from her jewelry box for a day. This method has a significant chance of backfiring if you don’t know what finger she wears the ring on. Make sure that you grab a ring that she wears on a similarly sized finger, the ring finger of her right hand being the optimal choice (unless, of course, she wears a ring on her left ring finger, but that’s a long shot). If all you can find is a pinky ring we can usually come up with a close approximation of what size her ring finger will be. If you do decide to become an amateur cat burglar, “borrow” a ring that she doesn’t wear everyday so she doesn’t unknowingly call the police on you!
• If the idea of stealing a ring and not losing seems terrifying you should do the sketch method instead. Simply take one of her rings and place it on a piece of paper. Trace the inside and outside of her ring with pencil or pen a few times to make sure that your rings are consistent.
